Taekwondo is a physical expression of the human will for survival and an
activity to fulfill the spiritual desires of people. Basically, all the actions
in Taekwondo are developed from the human instinct for self-defense, reinforced
with positive elements as needs arise, to ultimately reach the absolute state,
able to overcome the ego, and arrive at the moment of perfection, giving the sport
a philosophical dimension.
Taekwondo, known as the oldest self-defense Martial Art in the world is recorded
in the Kogooryo Dynasty, founded in 37 B.C. in the northern part of the Korean
Peninsula. This 2000 plus year old Martial Art has been uniquely developed in
Korea. Taekwondo is not merely a Martial Art for self-defense against an assailant,
but it is also a physical exercise to develop strength and agility, while maintaining
physical and mental health.
What cannot be over-emphasized in Taekwondo is that it is a philosophy with values
(Tenets), which are courtesy, integrity, perseverance,
self-control and indomitable spirit, rather than just simple techniques
and skills. In the course of training, one will be taught to maintain composure,
sacrifice, modesty and generosity based upon self-confidence. You will be self-confident
that the mental and moral aspects of Taekwondo will contribute in your role in
society.
Taekwondo transforms one's character into a strong spirit so that one can develop
leadership to guide and lead in every walk of life. Leadership and a strong fighting
spirit provide confidence in every way, therefore patience and modesty are created.
Therefore Taekwondo is a basis upon which a person is refined and shaped into
becoming a righteous and patriotic person. One will then overcome him/her self
with the spirit of self-sacrifice, gaining in the end an outstanding character
and leadership in society.
